Mahia Peninsula is located on the east coast of New Zealand's north island between the cities of Napier and Gisborne, and 30 mins from Wairoa.
You are able to catch a regular flight from Auckland and Wellington to Gisborne or Napier, and easily pick up a rental car for the drive to Mahia Peninsula.
Mahia is located 1 hours drive from Gisborne, 2 hour drive from Napier, or a 6 hour drive from Wellington. The voyage to Mahia Peninsula is an enjoyable one.
From Gisborne take State Highway 2 to Nuhaka
From Napier take State Highway 2 to Wairoa, and then carry onto Nuhaka.
From Nuhaka take the road to Mahia, you will travel under an overhead bridge around the coast past Blacks Beach. This is a beautiful drive along the coast line & the views of Mahia Peninsula in the distance are spectacular. Under another overhead bridge and into Opoutama village which has a Garage on your right and a school on your left.
Just past there via right over the railway line, and across the isthmus. You will see the Mahia Beach houses in the distance. Turn right into Moana drive, drive along past the Motor Camp, and turn right at the T intersection into Newcastle Street.
Drive along Newcastle street, past the Lotto shop on your right. Turn first left into Dommett street & situated on the corner of Dommett & Newcastle street is a big blue house on your right – Welcome to the Happy House.
Tommy Tiddler house:
Drive along Newcastle street, past the Lotto shop on your right. Turn first left into Dommett street & situated on the corner of Dommett & Newcastle street is Tommy Tiddler on your right. Tommy Tiddler is the cute Kiwiana house.
Drive along Newcastle street, and take the first street right – Nolan Place. The Whalers retreat is the 3rd house on the left, 2 storied.
